TORONTO -- Jason Grilli said he owes Ezequiel Carrera a steak dinner.

Carrera jumped at the fence in right field to catch a drive by Pedro Alvarez with the bases loaded on Sunday.

It went for a sacrifice fly but it was not quite enough for the Baltimore Orioles.

When Grilli struck out Jonathan Schoop to end the game, he had his first save with his new team and the Toronto Blue Jays had a 10-9 victory to take the final three games of the four-game series.

"I know Petey (Alvarez) from playing with him," said Grilli, who joined the Blue Jays on May 31 in a trade with the Atlanta Braves. "I know he's got some pop. I didn't want to leave a fat one in the zone. Whether the wind knocked it down enough or he didn't get it off the good part or the bat, it worked in my favor. ... He made a heck of a catch. I owe him a streak dinner now."

Grilli was called upon in the ninth because regular close, Roberto Osuna, had a sore arm and was being rested for a couple of days.

Russell Martin hit a three-run home run, Kevin Pillar had a homer and two RBIs and Devon Travis had two RBIs for the Blue Jays (35-30).

The Orioles (36-26), who trailed by six runs, cut Toronto’s lead to one run twice with a five-homer attack. Adam Jones hit two of Baltimore’s homers and has 11 for the season. Alvarez, Chris Davis and Matt Wieters hit the others.

"It's a tough hole to dig out of on the road," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "Our guys were engaged and put a good scare into them."

Martin's homer in the sixth provided four-run cushion for Toronto before Jones hit a two-run homer in the eighth.

Grilli allowed a leadoff single to Manny Machado and walked Davis on a 3-2 check swing that Grilli felt was strike three. He did strike out Mark Trumbo before walking Wieters to load the bases for Alvarez.

"It's a tough stretch but we have confidence in our guys and we know they're going to bounce back,' Davis said. "A loss is never fun, no matter how you take it. We're not going to hang our head over it."

"It was one of those days, we outlasted them," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. " It was a (heck) of a game, really a (heck) of a series. So we feel good today."

Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez (3-7) got only one out in the first inning, allowing six hits and five runs before being rescued by Vance Worley.

"His stuff's not very crisp and he can't command a baseball right now," Showalter said or Jimenez. "That's a bad combination against a good-hitting team."

They got me right away," Jimenez said. "It wasn't like I was walking guys or anything. They came out swinging."

Aaron Sanchez (6-1), who started for the Blue Jays, allowed 10 hits that included four home runs and six runs in five innings to pick up the win. He left with a 7-6 lead and seven strikeouts.

"I felt like my curveball was really good, I flashed a change here and there that was OK, my fastball had good life and I felt like I was throwing it where I wanted to," Sanchez said. "It was just one of those days where they got the better end of me. But overall as a team, that was a huge win. We'll take that win and the series win and move on."

The Blue Jays started the game with doubles by Carrera and Josh Donaldson. Edwin Encarnacion hit an RBI single, Martin singled and Pillar had an RBI double. Travis hit a two-run double for a 5-0 lead.

Alvarez, Jonathan Schoop and Ryan Flaherty strung together second-inning singles to produce a second-inning run for Baltimore.

Encarnacion doubled with two out in the second, stole second and continued home on a throwing error by the catcher Wieters.

Pillar led off the third with his fourth homer of the season and it was 7-1 for Toronto.

Alvarez hit his seventh of the season for Baltimore with two out in the fourth.

The Orioles cut Toronto's lead to one with a four-run fifth that included solo homers by Jones and Wieters (No. 6) and a two-run shot by Davis (No. 16), who has hit homers in five straight games.

Jesse Chavez replaced Sanchez in the sixth and struck out the side.

Toronto went up 10-6 in the bottom of the sixth when Mychal Givens walked two and allowed Martin's fifth homer of the season, a three-run liner to center.

Blue Jays switch-pitcher Pat Venditte worked a perfect seventh. He gave up a two-out infield hit to Flaherty in the eighth followed by the second homer of the game by Jones.
