ATLANTA -- Unlike many left-handed batters, Atlanta's Jace Peterson is not afraid to dig in when there is a lefty on the mound.

As a result, he delivered the key hit that enabled the organization's prized rookie to win his major league debut.

Peterson drove in two runs with a long double against left-handed reliever Sean Gilmartin in the eighth inning to spark the Atlanta Braves to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the New York Mets on Friday night.

"He's not afraid to stick his nose in there," Atlanta manager said about Peterson, who entered the game hitting .278 against left-handed pitching. "He didn't change his approach at all."

Atlanta's rally began when shortstop Andrelton Simmons smacked a double off the left field wall against starter Jacob deGrom, who entered the eighth inning having surrendered only two hits and retired the previous 10 batters he faced.

Simmons took third on a sacrifice by left fielder Eury Perez and stayed put when pinch-hitter Pedro Ciriaco beat out an infield single to put runners on the corners.

New York brought in Gilmartin, a former No. 1 draft choice of Atlanta, to face Peterson, who responded with a long fly that kept rising over the head of Mets center fielder Juan Lagares and wound up rolling to the warning track. The double scored Simmons and Ciriaco.

"We battled, and Petey had a terrific at-bat there and hit it over the head of Lagares and we were able to score a couple runs and able to hold off in the ninth inning," Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez said.

The comeback gave rookie Matt Wisler (1-0) a win in his major league debut. The right-hander pitched eight innings and allowed one run and six hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Wisler threw only 88 pitches, 63 of them for strikes.

"He's got a good arm; he's got a good slider," New York manager Terry Collins said. "Thing that was most impressive was the strikes. You look up and he's got 60-something strikes in less than 90 pitches. That's pretty good."

Closer Jason Grilli pitched around an error in the ninth for his 19th save. He struck out two, including Darrell Ceciliani to end the game.

DeGrom (7-5) took the loss, despite allowing only two runs and four hits, with three strikeouts and one walk, in 7 1/3 innings. It was his first loss since May 11.

"Our pitching is very good. We've got some very good pitching," Collins said. "We're not scoring runs. You can't make too many mistakes because we're not scoring. Jake pitched a great game."

New York had six hits and left six batters on base. The Mets were 1-for-5 with runners in scoring postion.

The Mets broke through for the first run in the sixth. Third baseman Ruben Tejada stroked a leadoff double off the wall in left and moved to third on a long fly to right by first baseman Lucas Duda. Tejada scored when left fielder Michael Cuddyer looped a single to left that just got over Atlanta's drawn-in infield.

The loss dropped New York's road record to 10-22, which is the second worst in the league.

Wisler is the third rookie to start for the Braves this season. Mike Foltynewicz and Williams Perez have also started and won games for Atlanta.

Wisler became the second Atlanta starter to pitch at least eight innings and allow one or fewer run in their debut. The other was John Smoltz in 1988.

Wisler was acquired along with center fielder Cameron Maybin from San Diego in a deal that sent reliever Craig Kimbrel and outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. to the Padres. The Braves had tried to acquire Wisler in a previous deal with San Diego that sent Justin Upton to the West Coast and worked aggressively to bring him to the organization.

Wisler was advertised as a pitcher who can effectively throw four pitches for strikes rather than someone who blows batters away with their velocity.

"A.J. (Pierzynski, Atlanta catcher) was really excited," Gonzalez said. "He said , 'This guy can hit the glove anywhere I put it.' And the kid did a nice job. ... For him to get the win was a special night."

NOTES: The Braves recalled RHP Matt Wisler from Triple-A Gwinnett and placed him the starting rotation. The team sent RHP Sugar Ray Marimon to the G-Braves to make room on the roster. ... Atlanta 1B Freddie Freeman did not start for the second straight game because of a sore wrist. He is listed as day to day. Freeman had played in 234 consecutive games before sitting out Thursday's game against Boston. ... Birthday boys: New York RHP Jacob deGrom turned 27 and RHP Logan Verrett turned 25 on Friday. ... Starters for the second game in the three-game series are Atlanta RHP Williams Perez (3-0, 2.29) vs. New York RHP Noah Syndergaard (2-4, 3.76).
