ATLANTA -- Joey Terdoslavich picked a good time for his first major league home run.

The Atlanta outfielder broke a tie with a pinch-hit leadoff homer in the eighth inning as the Braves came back from a five-run deficit against San Diego Padres ace James Shields for a 6-5 victory Tuesday night.

"It felt like the coolest thing I've ever done," said Terdoslavich, who was hitless in his only three at-bats this season before the homer. "It was pretty special."

Terdoslavich, who had spent the most of the first two months on the disabled list, connected against reliever Joaquin Benoit (4-3), sending a blast into the seats in right-center field.

"When it got to 2-0, I was looking for something to drive," the switch hitter said. "I got a fastball and put a pretty good swing on it. ... It was awesome to be a part of a comeback like this."

In addition to Terdoslavich's homer, the Braves benefited from video review, with two of plate umpire Jerry Meals' calls overruled.

The Padres (30-30) appeared to regain the lead in the eighth inning, with Meals ruling Melvin Upton Jr. safe at the plate on a fielder's choice grounder. A video review, though, quickly changed the call.

The Braves (28-30) also had video review go their way in their five-run sixth inning against Shields.

"Obviously, we took very good advantage of the replays," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "That's what it is there for, and it worked our way this time."

Second baseman Jace Peterson started the comeback against Shields with a leadoff double, and first baseman Freddie Freeman followed an out later with a single. Padres second baseman Cory Spangenberg booted Nick Markakis' bouncer as the first run scored, and then Juan Uribe walked to load the bases.

Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons smashed a double to clear the bases. Uribe was at first called out at the plate, but a video review changed the verdict. Left fielder Jonny Gomes followed with a single to tie it, the safe call on Simmons standing after a review challenge by San Diego manager Bud Black.

"Our guys fight. They don't give up," Gonzalez said. "For them to come back against a tough pitcher like Shields, that was nice."

The five runs (four earned) in the inning matched the most Shields has given up in a game this season. He allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out six in 5 1/3 innings. He went at least six innings in 11 of his 12 previous starts this year.

"I didn't get the job done, basically," said Shields, who is 7-0 in his first season with the Padres. "I ended up throwing a (wild pitch), walking Uribe right there. Simmons hit a double down the line. Made a good pitch to Gomes right there. He normally doesn't hit ground balls to the right side.

"I didn't do the job. I've got to get better."

Braves closer Jason Grilli, who blew a lead the night before thanks to his own throwing error, made Terdoslavich's homer stand up this time by pitching around a one-out, ninth-inning double from first baseman Yonder Alonso for his 16th save.

Shortstop Clint Barmes struck out with runners on the corners to end the game.

The Padres knocked out Braves rookie starter Mike Foltynewicz in the sixth inning, with Shields getting things going with a two-out single. Center fielder Will Venable and catcher Derek Norris followed with RBI doubles to put San Diego up 5-0.

Foltynewicz gave up five runs on 12 hits, four more than in any of his first seven starts. He walked one and matched his season low with two strikeouts while lasting 5 2/3 innings.

Jim Johnson (2-3) pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the victory.

The pregame rain had already stopped before the scheduled first pitch, but the start was delayed 50 minutes because of storms in the area.
