OAKLAND, Calif. -- Baltimore Orioles rookie right-hander Tyler Wilson won't soon forget his first major league victory as a starter.

Wilson allowed just two runs and six hits over 7 2/3 innings in a 9-2 victory Monday night against the Oakland A's at the O.co Coliseum, but the significance of his victory went beyond baseball.

"The win definitely has a little more special meaning to me," Wilson said. "My wife's grandfather passed away two days ago, and the funeral was today, and he was a diehard baseball fan. And I know he was really enjoying watching that game.

"I think Papa Dan would have rather me be out here pitching ... than me be at his funeral."

To funeral for Dan O'Neill, his wife Chelsea's grandfather, took place in Pennsylvania.

Wilson (2-1) was called up Monday from Triple-A Norfolk to start in place of right-hander Chris Tillman, who is recovering from a sprained left ankle. His initial major league win came out of the bullpen earlier this season against the Miami Marlins.

Wilson struck out three, walked two and got 13 outs on ground balls Monday in his second career major league start.

"I try to establish that sinker early on, command the fastball both in and out and really just pound the bottom of the zone," Wilson said.

Chris Davis hit a three-run homer and Caleb Joseph added a two-run shot, giving Wilson more than enough support.

Before he threw his first pitch, Wilson had a 3-0 lead thanks to Davis' first-inning blast, the first baseman's 27th home run of the season. Joseph crushed a two-run homer in the fourth, making it 6-0. It was his catcher's ninth long ball of the year.

The question now is whether Wilson has done enough to avoid a quick return trip to Norfolk.

"We'll kind of reconvene (Tuesday) , see where we're at," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.

The Orioles pounded out 14 hits, and every starter except designated hitter Matt Wieters had at least one hit. Joseph went 2-for-4 with a double to go with his homer and career-high-matching three RBIs. Center fielder Adam Jones went 3-for-5 with an RBI double and scored a run. Second baseman Jonathan Schoop finished 3-for-4 with a double and two runs.

"When you start feeling really well and have a little bit of success, you try to run with it as best you can," Joseph said. "Try not to do too much, and when you get opportunities, you got to seize the moment."

The Orioles (54-51) moved into a three-way tie with the Minnesota Twins and Toronto Blue Jays for the second wild-card spot in the American League. They also moved to within 5 1/2 games of the New York Yankees in the AL East.

A's right-hander Jesse Chavez (5-11) lasted only 3 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits, including two home runs. He lost for the fifth time in his past six decisions. Chavez gave up only five home runs through the end of June. Since then, he has allowed six over six starts.

"Just off location-wise, being back over the plate one way too many times, and they took advantage of it and they did damage," Chavez said. "I have to sit down and think about it. Got to go back and look at some tapes about mechanical things."

Oakland left fielder Coco Crisp, activated from the 60-day disabled list before the game, had two hits and scored a run.

"It was good to see him get a couple hits right away, because confidence-wise now he is out there playing," A's manager Bob Melvin said.

A's catcher Stephen Vogt ended his 0-for-28 skid, the second longest of his career, with a sixth-inning double. He added an RBI double in the eighth.

The Orioles grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Left fielder Gerardo Parra and Jones hit back-to-singles with one out, and Davis brought them home with a towering home run into the right-center-field seats. Baltimore extended its lead to 4-0 in the third as Parra worked a leadoff walk and scored on Jones' double off the right-center-field wall.

Joseph made it 6-0 in the fourth with a two-run blast, his ninth of the season. Schoop lined a one-out single, and Joseph launched a home run into the left field seats.
