Padres 9, Cardinals 5: Jedd Gyorko hit a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning and finished with five RBIs to help visiting San Diego rally from a pair of deficits to top St. Louis.

Jake Goebbert had a three-run triple for the Padres, who drew 10 walks while improving to 10-4 in August. Seth Smith finished with three hits and an RBI and Alex Torres (2-1) retired the only man he faced to end a rally in the sixth as San Diego pulled within six games of San Francisco for the second wild-card spot in the National League.

Matt Carpenter delivered a two-run double and Matt Adams tripled in a run as the Cardinals saw their three-game winning streak snapped. Oscar Taveras and Jhonny Peralta also had RBIs for St. Louis, which fell three games behind first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central.

Abraham Almonte and Smith each singled with one out in the seventh and Yasmani Grandal walked before Gyorko turned on a Kevin Siegrist (1-3) offering for his second grand slam of the year to make it 8-5. Smith's added an RBI base hit in the eighth to provide a four-run bulge.

Peralta recorded an RBI double to ignite a four-run rally in the second, but San Diego answered right back in the third, when Gyorko singled in a run before Goebbert cleared the bases with a triple to right to tie it. Adams followed a two-out walk to Matt Holliday in the fifth with a three-base hit to put the Cardinals up 5-4.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Padres RHP Jesse Hahn allowed five runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings while his counterpart, RHP Shelby Miller, gave up four runs while walking a career-high six in six frames. ...
