Rangers 1, Mariners 0: Derek Holland tossed seven shutout innings and Leonys Martin went 3-for-4 with a run scored as host Texas snapped Seattle’s five-game winning streak.
Holland (1-0) limited the Mariners to six hits with no walks in his second start this season and Neftali Feliz retired Justin Smoak with runners on the corners in the ninth for his eighth save. Adrian Beltre plated Martin with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning for Texas, which ended its eight-game losing streak.
Austin Jackson and Robinson Cano had two hits apiece for Seattle, which saw its lead over Detroit for the second wild card cut to a half-game. James Paxton (5-2) cruised through the first five innings before Martin singled to begin the sixth, stole second base and later scored from third on Beltre’s sacrifice fly.
Holland, who improved to 9-2 in 18 career games against Seattle, exited after throwing 27 of his 93 pitches in the seventh. The Mariners threatened with a runner at second base in the eighth before Shawn Tolleson retired pinch-hitter Logan Morrison to end the inning.
Texas recorded its 17th shutout and gave interim manager Tim Bogar his first win following two losses despite going 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Chris Denorfia went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts for Seattle, which was seeking its first six-game winning streak of the season.
