Padres 2, Mariners 1: Tommy Medica had a pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift San Diego to an emotional win in the opener of a five-game homestand.

The hit made a winner of Joaquin Benoit (3-0), who struck out two in a perfect eighth after Andrew Cashner allowed a run in seven impressive frames. Alexi Amarista had a hit and scored a run for the Padres, who paid tribute to late legend Tony Gwynn prior to the game.

Felix Hernandez was given another tough no-decision after yielding a run and three hits while striking out 10 in seven innings for Seattle. Brad Miller had two hits and an RBI as the Mariners fell to 16-7 in their last 23 games in San Diego.

Seattle struck first in the second, when Mike Zunino was hit by a pitch, moved to third on Dustin Ackley's base hit and came home on Miller's single to left. Amarista led off the sixth with an infield hit and moved to third on a bunt and a groundout before dashing home on Hernandez's wild pitch to tie it.

It stayed that way until another infield hit - this one by Everth Cabrera - began the San Diego half of the eighth against Charlie Furbush (0-4). Cabrera moved up on a bunt and raced in on Medica's bloop single to center to snap the tie and Huston Street tossed a perfect ninth for his 19th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Gwynn, who spent all 20 years of his Hall of Fame career with San Diego, passed away at age 54 on Monday. A large No. 19 - Gwynn's number - was carved into the grass in right field and also etched behind home plate. ... Hernandez is winless in his last three starts despite allowing only two runs on 11 hits in 22 1/3 innings. ... Cashner has allowed two earned runs or fewer in 14 straight home starts.
