Mariners 5, Padres 1: Kyle Seager and Brad Miller homered while Chris Young tossed six strong innings against his former team as host Seattle downed San Diego on the same day the Padres mourned the passing of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn due to cancer at age 54.

Squaring off against the team he pitched for from 2006-10, Young (6-4) held San Diego’s major league-worst offense to four hits and a walk to defeat the only opponent he had yet to face. Robinson Cano doubled and scored while James Jones added a pair of runs for the Mariners, who have won two in a row since dropping five straight.

Tyson Ross (6-6), who permitted five runs on seven hits and a career-high seven walks over 5 2/3 innings, had yielded only one home run over his previous six outings before surrendering two to the first nine batters he encountered. Carlos Quentin homered off reliever Tom Wilhelmsen in the ninth inning to break up the shutout while Yasmani Grandal reached base three times and accounted for one of the four singles the Padres could muster off Young.

Young gave up consecutive one-out singles to Seth Smith and Quentin in the first, but allowed only one other baserunner past first for the rest of his outing. Ross struggled from the start, giving up a single to lead off the bottom half of the frame and a walk to Cano before Seager slammed a 3-0 fastball into the seats in right-center for his 10th homer.

Ross recovered with a pair of strikeouts to get out of the inning, but ran into trouble again in the second when Miller sent a deep flyball down the line in right to make it 4-0. Endy Chavez followed with a walk and advanced to second on a fielder’s choice grounder moments later before Cano lofted a flyball down the line in shallow left to plate the final run.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Seattle honored Gwynn with a pregame video tribute, a moment of silence and etched his number “19” in the “5.5 hole” between third base and shortstop – the space of the field in which he was famous for hitting through over his 20-year career. Gwynn, who was a 15-time All-Star, won eight batting titles and hit over .300 in each of his last 19 seasons. … Young improved to 9-2 with a 3.25 ERA in 16 career interleague starts. … The Padres have scored fewer than two runs in a major league-worst 22 games.
