Padres 8, Pirates 2: Seth Smith went 2-for-4 with a three-run triple and San Diego rallied to win its 14th consecutive series in Pittsburgh.

Tyson Ross (11-10) recovered from a 2-0 deficit two batters into the game to blank the Pirates for the remainder of his six-inning stint and improve to 4-0 in his last five starts. Yonder Alonso and Jedd Gyorko each drove in a pair of runs as the Padres won for the eighth time in 11 games.

Rookie Gregory Polanco clubbed a two-run homer for Pittsburgh, which had won 11 of 13 at home before dropping the final two contests of the series to reside 2 1/2 games behind first-place Milwaukee in the National League Central. Charlie Morton (5-11) lasted only five innings and was tagged for five runs on as many hits to remain winless in his last seven turns.

The Pirates jumped on Ross in their first at-bat as Starling Marte led off with a single and Polanco followed by crushing a hanging slider deep into the seats in right for his sixth homer. San Diego, which scored three runs in the previous two games, cut the deficit in half on Alonso's two-out single in the fourth before pushing across four runs in the fifth against Morton.

Abraham Almonte and Rene Rivera led off the fifth inning with singles and Yangervis Solarte was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Smith, who cleared them with an opposite-field triple off the wall in left before scoring on a wild pitch by Morton for a 5-2 edge. Alonso added an insurance run with a seventh-inning sacrifice fly and Gyorko had a two-RBI single in the ninth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Ross logged his 10th consecutive start with at least six innings pitched and two or fewer earned runs allowed, matching the longest streak in franchise history. ... Pirates 2B Neil Walker, who has made one start since Aug. 1, was not in the lineup after suffering a setback with his ailing back and could be headed to the 15-day disabled list. ... SS Everth Cabrera was a late scratch from the starting lineup due to a left hamstring cramp for San Diego, which returns home to host Colorado on Monday. ... LF Josh Harrison had his 13-game hitting streak halted for the Pirates, who host Detroit in opener of a four-game, home-and-home series.
