Pirates 4, Padres 1: Neil Walker and Pedro Alvarez each hit two-run homers as visiting Pittsburgh defeated San Diego for the second straight night.

Gerrit Cole (6-3) allowed one run and four hits over 5 2/3 innings to win his third consecutive decision. Four relievers combined for 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief with Jason Grilli striking out two in the ninth to record his ninth save.

Jesse Hahn (0-1) struck out five in 3 2/3 innings in his major-league debut for the Padres but allowed four runs and six hits. Yonder Alonso singled in the run for San Diego, which lost its third straight game.

Jordy Mercer singled in the third and was on board when Walker drilled a two-run homer to left-center field. Russell Martin walked in the fourth and scored when Alvarez scorched a low line drive over the fence in right to make it 4-0.

The Padres had just one hit over 5 2/3 innings against Cole before putting together three straight singles to chase the right-hander. Chase Headley and Seth Smith had the first two singles and Headley scored on Alonso’s base-hit to left.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Padres LHP Jason Lane, a former major-league outfielder, was recalled from Triple-A El Paso and the 37-year-old retired all 10 batters he faced in his first big-league appearance as a pitcher. … Cole struck out six and walked two and Pittsburgh pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts overall. … San Diego optioned RHP Donn Roach to Triple-A El Paso and placed LHP Eric Stults on the bereavement list to open roster spots for Hahn (recalled from Double-A San Antonio) and Lane.
