Athletics 8, Nationals 0: Tommy Milone threw eight scoreless innings while Brandon Moss, Yoenis Cespedes and John Jaso homered as Oakland won the opener of the three-game series against visiting Washington.

Milone (1-3) gave up two hits and struck out seven while going at least eight innings without allowing a run for the third time in his career. Moss had two hits and drove in three runs, Cespedes had two hits and scored twice and Josh Reddick, Josh Donaldson and Derek Norris also had two hits apiece for Oakland.

Doug Fister (0-1) lasted 4 1/3 innings in his season debut after missing the opening five weeks with a strained lat, allowing seven runs (five earned) and nine hits while committing one of Washington’s three errors. Scott Hairston had two of the three hits for the Nationals.

Fister got the first two outs in the first inning, but Donaldson followed with an infield single, continued to third on a throwing error by Fister on the play and scored on a single by Moss. The Athletics tacked on another run in the third as Jaso led off with his second home run of the season.

Cespedes singled and scored on a wild pitch in a two-run fourth that gave the Athletics a 4-0 lead. Cespedes stepped up to the plate in the fifth after Moss had homered and also went deep to extend the lead to 7-0 and chase Fister.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Athletics placed RHP Ryan Cook on the 15-day disabled list with a forearm strain and optioned RHP Dan Straily to Triple-A Sacramento. They also recalled relievers Fernando Rodriguez and Joe Savery from their Triple-A club and moved RHP Drew Pomeranz into the starting rotation. … Oakland OF Coco Crisp was kept out Friday's series opener with a strained neck after making a diving catch Wednesday, and he’s also expected to miss Saturday’s game. … The Athletics are 15-6 this season when they score at least four runs.
