Phillies 4, Pirates 3: Maikel Franco slapped a tiebreaking RBI single to right field in the seventh inning as host Philadelphia prevailed.

Batting second for the first time in his five-game major-league career, Franco delivered the decisive base hit off Justin Wilson (3-4) to plate Freddy Galvis, who reached on an infield single to begin the inning and also homered earlier in the contest. Galvis finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored while Russell Martin drove in two runs for Pittsburgh, which remained 4 1/2 games behind first-place St. Louis in the National League Central and 1 1/2 ahead of both Atlanta and Milwaukee for the second wild-card spot.

Neither Pittsburgh's Edinson Volquez nor Phillies rookie David Buchanan factored in the decision despite each allowing three runs and striking out five in six innings. Starling Marte contributed two hits for Pittsburgh, while Franco recorded his first career multi-hit performance for Philadelphia.

Chase Utley's RBI single in the first inning gave Philadelphia an early 1-0 lead, but Jordy Mercer quickly tied things up with a run-scoring double in the second. Buchanan grounded a sharp single up the middle to plate Galvis and put the Phillies back ahead in their half of the second, but the Pirates answered again as Martin's double in the third scored a pair of runs.

Galvis tied things in the fifth with a blast over the right-field wall - his second of the season - against Volquez. Justin De Fratus (3-1) worked around a pair of two-out singles in the seventh, Ken Giles cruised through the eighth and Jonathan Papelbon retired the final two hitters with the tying run on second base in the ninth for his 36th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Utley's first-inning single plated Franco, who had reached second when a routine fly ball fell between Pittsburgh 2B Neil Walker and RF Gregory Polanco. ... Pirates 3B Josh Harrison (.316), Phillies CF Ben Revere (.310) and Pittsburgh CF Andrew McCutchen (.309), all of whom are in the running for the National League batting crown, combined to go 1-for-12. ... Volquez has yielded three earned runs or fewer in nine consecutive starts.
