Phillies 1, Nationals 0: Chase Utley provided all the offense with a first-inning RBI single and spot starter Roberto Hernandez outdueled Gio Gonzalez as host Philadelphia took two of three from Washington.

Hernandez (2-1) drew his first start since April 25 after Cole Hamels was scratched Saturday due to the flu and yielded only four hits – all singles – and three walks over a season-high 7 1/3 frames. Two relievers bridged the gap to Jonathan Papelbon, who worked around a two-out single from Sandy Leon in the ninth for his ninth save in 10 chances.

Gonzalez (3-2) took the hard-luck loss despite giving up only one run on four hits and two walks while striking out seven over 7 1/3 innings. Denard Span accounted for two of the Nationals’ five hits with a pair of singles as Washington lost consecutive games to Philadelphia after winning eight of the previous 10 meetings.

Hernandez got off to a rocky start by allowing three straight hitters to reach with one out in the first, but left fielder John Mayberry Jr. threw out Kevin Frandsen as he tried to advance to third on Jayson Werth’s single. Hernandez got out of the opening frame when Anthony Rendon grounded out and settled in after that, allowing only two singles and a walk over the next six innings.

Following a groundout from Ben Revere in the bottom half of the first, Jimmy Rollins ripped a 3-2 fastball into the gap in left-center for a triple and Utley plated him two pitches later when he grounded a single past Gonzalez. After Span opened the eighth with a single off Hernandez and Frandsen moved him to second with a bunt, reliever Mike Adams retired Werth and Antonio Bastardo struck out Rendon to leave runners on the corners to end the Nationals’ final scoring threat.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Philadelphia scored seven of its 11 runs in this series in the first inning. … Gonzalez, who fell to 4-2 in seven career outings at Citizens Bank Park despite a 2.20 ERA, has given up three runs or fewer in each of his starts at the venue. … Hamels is scheduled to return Tuesday as the Phillies remain home to face the Toronto Blue Jays for two interleague games starting on Monday while Washington will begin a three-game home set with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday.
