Yankees 3, Rays 2: Brandon McCarthy yielded two runs and four hits over seven innings as visiting New York took advantage of only four hits to edge Tampa Bay and avoid a three-game sweep.

McCarthy (10-14) has enjoyed some success throughout his major-league career but never had won 10 games in a season prior to Wednesday's victory giving him double-digit wins in 2014. He struck out four against one walk to outduel Alex Cobb, who had been 5-1 with a 1.26 ERA since the All-Star break.

Cobb (9-8) allowed three runs, four hits and three walks in six innings while Evan Longoria homered and added an RBI groundout for Tampa Bay. Chase Headley had an RBI double and scored a run for New York while Brett Gardner and Brendan Ryan also drove in runs for the Yankees.

McCarthy fell behind 1-0 in the fourth when Longoria drove an 0-1 pitch over the center-field wall for his 22nd homer, but New York answered with two runs in the top of the fifth. Cobb opened the frame by hitting Chris Young with a pitch before Headley doubled him home and scored on Ryan's ground-rule double.

The Yankees loaded the bases with one out in the sixth and Gardner drove a 3-0 pitch to deep right field, but Wil Myers made a leaping grab at the wall to limit the damage, even as Derek Jeter scored on the sacrifice fly. The Rays got within 3-2 in the sixth, but McCarthy struck out the side in the seventh, Dellin Betances retired two Tampa Bay hitters with the tying run in scoring position in the eighth and David Robertson wrapped up his 37th save by striking out Nick Franklin with the tying run on first.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Playing his final game in Tampa Bay, Jeter received a warm ovation before his first at-bat. He went 1-for-4 and is batting .122 (6-for-49) in
September. ... McCarthy's seventh inning was an "immaculate inning," meaning he struck out the side on nine pitches. There have only been six immaculate
innings in the majors this season. ... Veteran umpire Joe West, who was scheduled to work the Yankees and Rays on Wednesday, was suspended for the game for grabbing the jersey of Phillies pitcher Jonathan Papelbon during Sunday's game between Philadelphia and Miami.
