Padres 5, Twins 4 (10): Seth Smith homered to lead off the 10th inning as visiting San Diego salvaged the finale of an abbreviated two-game series versus Minnesota.

After Everth Cabrera forged a 4-4 tie with a sacrifice fly in the ninth, Smith launched a 3-1 fastball from Anthony Swarzak (2-1) over the wall in right field for his 12th homer - and first since July 19. Kevin Quackenbush (2-2) picked up the win after stranding a pair of runners in the ninth and Joaquin Benoit retired the side in the 10th for his fourth save.

Smith and Jedd Gyorko each had an RBI double for San Diego, which announced vice president/assistant general manager Chad MacDonald is leaving the organization on the same day that A.J. Preller was introduced as the team's GM. Yonder Alonso had three hits and scored the tying run in the ninth as the Padres posted their 11th win in 17 outings and snapped a nine-game losing skid to the Twins.

Trevor Plouffe belted a two-run homer and added an RBI single for Minnesota, which saw its three-game winning streak come to an end. Eduardo Escobar had an RBI single among his two hits and San Diego native Kevin Correia allowed three runs on five hits in six innings to record his eighth quality start in 11 appearances.

Plouffe gave the Twins a 2-0 lead after depositing a 2-2 curveball from rookie Odrisamer Despaigne over the wall in left field for his eighth homer - and first since July 18. San Diego rallied to secure a 3-3 tie in the sixth before Plouffe regained the Twins' advantage in the bottom of the frame with a line-drive single to left to plate rookie Danny Santana.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Minnesota 2B Brian Dozier had a one-out single in the first to extend his hitting streak to seven games. He is 12-for-28 during the stretch. ... San Diego CF Will Venable went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts to see his six-game hitting streak come to a halt. ...
