Padres 3, Brewers 2 (10): Rene Rivera tied the game with a solo homer in the ninth inning and delivered an RBI single in the 10th as host San Diego took the rubber match of the three-game series.

After atoning for a passed ball that allowed a run to score in the seventh by belting his home run two innings later, Rivera completed his heroic effort in the following frame by plating Yasmani Grandal with the winning run. Pinch-hitter Jake Goebbert recorded an RBI single and Dale Thayer (4-3) picked up the win after tossing a perfect top of the 10th for the Padres, who are eight games behind San Francisco for the second National League wild-card spot.

Elian Herrera went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Lyle Overbay also recorded two hits for the Brewers, who remained 1 1/2 games ahead of second-place St. Louis in the NL Central. Zach Duke (4-1) took the loss, allowing a run on two hits and a walk while getting only two outs after Francisco Rodriguez blew his sixth save opportunity of the season in the ninth.

Both teams put runners on second and third with one out in their halves of the fifth inning but were unable to cash in. Milwaukee finally got to Odrisamer Despaigne in the seventh as Herrera plated Overbay with a double and advanced to third on the throw home before scoring on Rivera's passed ball.

San Diego halved the deficit in the bottom of the frame as Jedd Gyorko led off with an infield single against reliever Jeremy Jeffress and came home on Goebbert's base hit four batters later. Rodriguez started the ninth for Milwaukee and threw two straight balls to Rivera before his third pitch was lined over the left-field wall.
