Padres 9, Marlins 3: Red-hot Seth Smith had four RBIs and finished a single shy of the cycle and Chase Headley slammed a three-run homer in his return to the lineup to power host San Diego.

Smith belted a solo homer to go with an RBI triple and two-run double, Yonder Alonso went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Everth Cabrera had two hits and scored three runs as the Padres pounded Miami for the second straight night. Eric Stults (2-3) overcame a wobbly first inning to win for the first time since April 19, allowing two runs on six hits over six frames.

Casey McGehee clubbed a two-run homer, Reed Johnson had two hits and an RBI and Jeff Baker collected three hits for the Marlins, who dropped back-to-back games for the first time since April 23-25. Carlos Marmol (0-3) gave up four runs in one inning to take the loss in relief of Nathan Eovaldi, who labored through 112 pitches over five innings but limited the damage to two runs.

Stults was in a 2-0 hole four batters into the game after allowing a leadoff single to Johnson and McGehee's two-out shot to center, but Smith delivered an RBI triple in the bottom of the inning before tying it with a solo shot in the fourth.

Headley, who missed 14 games with a calf strain, capped a four-run sixth with a towering homer down the right-field line off Marmol in the sixth to make it 6-2 and Smith doubled home two more runs in the seventh to give him 10 extra-base hits during a seven-game hitting streak. The Marlins announced after the contest that Marmol was designated for assignment.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Smith is 15-for-27 with one homer, three triples and six doubles during his seven-game string. ... Marlins RF Giancarlo Stanton went 1-for-4 to push his hitting streak to 12 games. ... McGehee's homer was his first since Aug. 11, 2012, when he was a member of the New York Yankees. ... The Padres optioned RHP Kevin Quackenbush to Triple-A El Paso to clear a roster spot for Headley, who was 4-for-12 in four rehab games.
