Twins 8, Astros 0: Rookie Danny Santana went 4-for-5 with five RBIs to lead host Minnesota past Houston.
Santana delivered a two-run single, a two-run double and an RBI single during the best performance of his 21-game stint in the majors. The Twins had just seven hits but took advantage of eight walks and two Houston errors to halt the Astros’ six-game road winning streak.
Minnesota right-hander Kyle Gibson (5-5) allowed three hits in seven shutout innings to record his first victory since May 16. Gibson struck out five and walked three before Jared Barton worked a scoreless eighth and Caleb Thielbar completed the Twins’ fourth shutout of the season.
Minnesota loaded the bases in the second on a hit by pitch, an error and a walk and scored its first run off Scott Feldman (3-4) when Houston shortstop Marwin Gonzalez booted Aaron Hicks’ grounder. Santana followed with the Twins’ first hit to drive in two and make it 3-0.
Two runners reached on walks in the fourth before Santana notched Minnesota’s second hit – a two-run double to left-center field to make it 5-0. Josh Willingham added a run-scoring single and Chris Parmelee drew a bases-loaded walk later in the inning to make it a seven-run margin and Santana capped his best day with a run-scoring single to center in the seventh.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Minnesota reportedly has reached a one-year deal with free agent DH/1B Kendrys Morales, who had 23 homers and 80 RBIs for Seattle last season. … Feldman was removed after throwing 58 pitches in 1 2/3 innings, giving up three unearned runs, two walks, a hit batter and Santana’s two-run single. … Twins C Kurt Suzuki scored three runs, reaching on a single and walking twice.
