Yankees 5, Tigers 1: Brian McCann and Chase Headley each belted a solo homer and New York drew clear with three runs in the eighth against visiting Detroit.

McCann drove in two runs and Adam Warren (2-5) worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Chris Capuano, who allowed one unearned run while striking out eight over 6 2/3 frames. New York improved to 12-7 since the All-Star break and remained one game back of Toronto for the second wild-card spot in the American League.

Justin Verlander (10-10) was the hard-luck loser after yielding two runs over seven innings while throwing 114 pitches. Andrew Romine and Ezequiel Carrera had two hits apiece for Detroit, which holds a 3 1/2-game lead over Kansas City in the AL Central.

Rajai Davis opened the game by reaching base on a Derek Jeter error and later moved to third before scoring on Miguel Cabrera’s sacrifice fly. Headley answered with a one-out blast in the fifth for the Yankees, who faced their third consecutive Cy Young Award winner after opening the series against Max Scherzer and David Price.

New York pulled ahead in the seventh on McCann’s 13th home run and second in as many games before adding three insurance runs in the eighth against Blaine Hardy. Detroit had the bases loaded with one out in the eighth before Warren retired J.D. Martinez and Nick Castellanos to end the threat.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Detroit SS Eugenio Suarez (sprained left knee) and OF Torii Hunter (bruised left hand) are both listed as day-to-day after missing Wednesday’s game. … New York 1B Mark Teixeira delivered an RBI single in the eighth and scored a run before exiting the game with an apparent left hand injury. ... The Yankees committed four errors and had their streak of 16 straight games decided by two runs or fewer come to an end.
