Twins 4, Indians 1: Rookie Kennys Vargas homered among three hits and Phil Hughes pitched seven innings of one-run ball to outduel Corey Kluber as host Minnesota halted a four-game losing streak.

Trevor Plouffe had a tiebreaking two-run double and Oswaldo Arcia added an RBI double to back Hughes (14-8), who won his fourth consecutive start by striking out eight and yielding five hits. Casey Fien worked a scoreless eighth before closer Glen Perkins set down the side in order in the ninth for his 32nd save.

Zach Walters homered for the second straight day to supply the lone run for Cleveland, which lost for only the third time in 10 games to remain 4 1/2 games back in the race for the American League's second wild card. Kluber (13-7) had his six-game winning streak snapped, giving up three runs and fanning eight over seven innings for his first defeat since June 30.

Vargas put the Twins on top by clubbing an opposite-field homer into the seats in left with one out in the fourth, but the Indians answered in their next at-bat when Walters launched a 1-2 pitch into the stands in right - his fourth blast in nine games with Cleveland.

Vargas ignited a two-run sixth inning with a ground-rule double and Arcia drew a walk before Plouffe doubled into the left corner to plate both runners for a 3-1 edge. Vargas also led off eighth with an inield single, leading to an insurance run when Arcia doubled home pinch runner Eduardo Núñez.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Kluber became the fifth-fastest Cleveland pitcher to register 200 strikeouts in a season and is the first right-hander for the Indians to reach that milestone since Bartolo Colon (2001). ... Vargas' homer ended a 20-inning string and a drought of 73 at-bats without an extra-base hit for the Twins. ... C Yan Gomes exited the contest due to illness for Cleveland, which hosts Houston in a three-game series while Minnesota welcomes AL Central rival Detroit for a four-game set beginning Friday night.
