Cubs 2, Phillies 1: Starlin Castro smacked a two-run homer and Jake Arrieta pitched seven scoreless innings as visiting Chicago claimed the opener of the three-game series.

Arrieta (2-1) racked up a season-high nine strikeouts and limited the Phillies to two hits and a walk while earning his first win since May 22. Pedro Strop stranded a runner in scoring position in the eighth and rookie Neil Ramirez gave up Domonic Brown's RBI single in the ninth before striking out Carlos Ruiz looking for his second save.

Roberto Hernandez (2-5) allowed two runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings before being ejected after he hit Castro in the left arm with a pitch. Jimmy Rollins doubled off the wall in right to start the ninth, tying Mike Schmidt for the franchise record with 2,234 career hits.

Hernandez matched zeroes with Arrieta for three innings but issued a leadoff walk to Anthony Rizzo in the fourth and left a 1-1 pitch up in the zone to Castro, who belted it to left-center for his ninth homer. The Phillies had a handful of opportunities to cut into the lead but went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position before Brown's two-out RBI single in the ninth.

Arrieta retired the first seven batters he faced and didn't allow a hit until Brown dropped a double on the left-field line with one out in the fifth. Marlon Byrd legged out a grounder for an infield single with two outs in the seventh while Ruiz led off the eighth with a base hit and took second on a wild pitch before Strop induced back-to-back groundouts to end the threat.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Home plate umpire Mark Ripperger ejected Hernandez immediately after his first pitch hit Castro, who had homered in his previous at-bat. After a brief argument with Ripperger, who had not issued any warnings, Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg also was ejected. … The Phillies dropped to 1-30 when trailing after eight innings. … The Cubs placed 2B-CF Emilio Bonifacio on the 15-day disabled list with right rib cage inflammation and activated OF Ryan Sweeney from the DL.
