Pirates 4, Cubs 0: Andrew McCutchen went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Edinson Volquez pitched seven scoreless innings as Pittsburgh took three of four from visiting Chicago.
McCutchen had two of the Pirates' season-high seven doubles and Russell Martin added a pair of doubles and an RBI. Volquez (4-5) scattered seven hits and two walks and struck out five to improve to 6-0 all-time against the Cubs.
Luis Valbuena and Darwin Barney each had two hits for the Cubs, who continued their offensive woes when ace Jeff Samardzija faces the Pirates — they've scored a total of five runs while losing the last six games the right-hander has started against Pittsburgh. Samardzija (2-6) struck out seven and allowed four runs and nine hits over six innings.
Chicago's Nate Schierholtz threw out Clint Barmes at the plate to end the third inning and preserve a scoreless tie, but the Pirates opened up a 2-0 lead in the fourth on Martin's RBI double and Jordy Mercer's sacrifice fly. Pittsburgh tacked on two more on McCutchen's double an inning later — his 15th extra-base hit in his last 11 games.
The Cubs had two runners in scoring position after Valbuena's one-out double in the sixth, but Volquez struck out Schierholtz with heavy rain falling and got John Baker to bounce out to second to end the threat. Chicago was 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The start of the game was delayed 21 minutes and play was halted for another 1 hour, 14 minutes in the bottom of the seventh because of rain. … Cubs leadoff man Emilio Bonifacio injured his right ribcage on a swing in the first inning and had to come out of the game. … Pittsburgh LHP Tony Watson struck out the side in the eighth and has not allowed a run in 21 2/3 innings, the club's longest streak since Charlie Morton went 24 innings in 2011.
