Padres 11, Cubs 1: Chase Headley drove in three runs and Yonder Alonso and Yasmani Grandal each homered as San Diego routed visiting Chicago to snap a four-game losing streak.
Cameron Maybin scored three runs while Alonso, Grandal and Seth Smith had two RBIs apiece as the Padres recorded a season best for runs scored. Five players had two hits as San Diego racked up 12 overall, six going for extra bases.
Tim Stauffer (2-0) struck out five and allowed two hits while tossing five shutout innings in his first start of the season. The Padres scored just four runs in the first three games of the six-game homestand before breaking out and sending the Cubs to only their second loss in six games.
Smith had a two-run single and Alonso smacked a two-run homer to right-center field as the Padres scored four first-inning runs against Edwin Jackson (3-4). Grandal hit an opposite-field blast to left in the second and Headley added a two-run double that one-hopped the fence in right to make it 7-0.
Headley stroked a run-scoring single in the fourth to make it 8-0 before Chicago got on the board in the seventh on Welington Castillo’s run-scoring single. San Diego piled on three more in the bottom of the inning with Jedd Gyorko’s run-scoring double to right highlighting the frame.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Jackson allowed eight runs and nine hits in four innings. … The Padres plan to recall RHP Billy Buckner from Triple-A El Paso to start Saturday’s game. … Chicago OF Justin Ruggiano (hamstring) is close to finishing a rehab assignment and could be back in the majors by early next week.
