Cubs 5, Padres 1: Anthony Rizzo went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer to lead visiting Chicago past San Diego in the opener of their four-game series.

Rizzo, who broke into the majors with the Padres in 2011, belted a mammoth blast for his first homer at Petco Park since being traded to the Cubs following that campaign. Junior Lake also had two hits and drove in a run as Chicago began its 10-game road trip with its fourth win in five games overall.

Jake Arrieta (1-0) struck out seven while allowing one run and four hits in six innings. Carlos Villanueva pitched three scoreless frames for his first save of this season and the seventh of his career as the Cubs handed the Padres their fourth straight loss.

Seth Smith homered in the first to get San Diego on the board. Chicago took the lead in the fourth, when Rizzo followed Lake’s bunt single with a shot over the right-center field wall off Eric Stults (2-5).

Darwin Barney and Emilio Bonifacio had RBI singles in the fifth to make it 4-1 and Lake climaxed the uprising with a run-scoring double that one-hopped the fence in center. Stults allowed five runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Padres manager Bud Black missed the game to attend the graduation of daughter Jessie from the University of Maryland. Bench coach Dave Roberts ran the club in Black’s place. … Lake is 17-for-46 with 10 RBIs over his last 13 games. … San Diego LHP Robbie Erlin (elbow), who was scheduled to start Friday, was placed on the disabled list and will be replaced by RHP Tim Stauffer. RHP Blaine Boyer was recalled from Triple-A El Paso to fill the roster spot and pitched two scoreless innings Thursday in his first major-league appearance since 2011.
