Cubs 12, White Sox 5: Anthony Rizzo, Starlin Castro and Mike Olt homered to help the visiting Cubs avoid a sweep in the four-game, home-and-home Crosstown Cup series.
Rizzo went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and scored three runs and Olt smashed his first career grand slam among his two hits as the Cubs snapped a four-game skid. Starter Jake Arrieta lasted only four innings, but the Cubs' bullpen kept the White Sox off the board until the ninth with Bryan Schlitter (2-0) working 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the win.
Alexei Ramirez went 4-for-5 and scored twice and Tyler Flowers knocked in a pair of runs for the White Sox, who had a four-game winning streak halted. White Sox starter Scott Carroll (1-2) allowed nearly as many hits (11) as he recorded outs (12) before departing following back-to-back singles to start the fifth.
Ryan Kalish tripled leading off the third and scored on Luis Valbuena's single before Rizzo blasted a two-run shot to center to give the Cubs their first lead of the series at 3-2. The Cubs pushed home another run later in the inning on Junior Lake's bases-loaded walk and Castro's two-run shot to left-center made it 6-2 in the fourth.
Flowers and Conor Gillaspie had RBI singles in the fourth to cut into the deficit, but the Cubs broke it open in the eighth against Maikel Cleto. Welington Castillo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Olt followed with a deep drive to left for the Cubs' first grand slam of the season.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The White Sox bullpen ran its scoreless streak to 23 1/3 innings before the five-run outburst in the eighth. The streak dated to May 2 and is the club's longest such streak since a 32-inning stretch in 1991. … The Cubs had more hits in the third inning (five) than in any of the previous three games in the series and more in the game (15) than in the first three games combined (12). … Every Cubs starter had at least one hit.
