Tigers 7, White Sox 4: Miguel Cabrera had three RBIs and Max Scherzer struck out 10 in six innings as host Detroit edged Chicago to split a four-game series.
Rajai Davis went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs and Nick Castellanos added a run-scoring single as the Tigers won for the fourth time in six games. Detroit led by one in the eighth before Bryan Holaday lined a run-scoring single and Davis smacked a run-scoring double to provide insurance.
Scherzer (2-1) gave up two runs and seven hits and walked one while winning his second consecutive start. Joe Nathan worked the ninth for his fourth save and struck out two as four Detroit pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts.
Adam Dunn homered to right off Scherzer in the second to give Chicago the early lead and the Tigers tied it in the bottom of the inning when Austin Jackson tripled and scored on Castellanos’ single to center. Cabrera’s ground single to right in the third gave Detroit a 2-1 lead and Davis socked a two-out homer to left in the fifth off White Sox starter Jose Quintana (1-2), who allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings.
Chicago moved within a run in the sixth when Dayan Viciedo tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Alexei Ramirez but Cabrera singled in two with the bases-loaded in the seventh to make it 5-2. Chicago scored twice in the eighth, with Ramirez driving in one with a single and Viciedo scoring from third when Alejandro De Aza stole second and Holaday’s throw went into center field.
GAME NOTEBOOK: White Sox 2B Gordon Beckham (oblique) was activated from the disabled list and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his first game of the season. … Castellanos and Holaday each went 2-for-4 as Detroit finished with 13 hits while Viciedo had three of the White Sox’s 11 hits. … Chicago 3B Conor Gillaspie (left hand) missed his third consecutive start when he was scratched from the lineup while OF Adam Eaton (hamstring) missed his fifth straight contest.
