Phillies 4, Braves 0:
Kyle Kendrick enjoyed his best start of 2014, tossing seven stellar innings as visiting Philadelphia shut out Atlanta for the second straight day.

After Cole Hamels and three relievers combined to no-hit the Braves on Monday, Kendrick (8-11) and two relievers held Atlanta to three hits in this one. Kendrick yielded three hits and two walks, Ken Giles worked a 1-2-3 eighth and Antonio Bastardo struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth.

Carlos Ruiz homered and added an RBI double for Philadelphia, which has won seven of its last nine games. Jayson Heyward recorded two doubles for Atlanta, which has scored a total of one run while losing three of its last four contests.

Ruiz's line-drive homer to left field in the fifth put the Phillies on the board and Darin Ruf delivered an RBI single in the sixth against Mike Minor (6-9), who gave up three runs and seven hits over 7 1/3 innings. Philadelphia added two more runs in the eighth, including an RBI double by Ruiz off reliever Anthony Varvaro.

Beginning with a double by Heyward, the Braves loaded the bases with one out in the first before Kendrick struck out Evan Gattis and Chris Johnson to escape the jam. Andrelton Simmons singled in the third but was caught stealing and Heyward was stranded after a leadoff double in the seventh as Atlanta remained seven games behind Washington in the National League East and 1 1/2 back of Milwaukee for the second wild-card spot.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Braves LF Justin Upton left after the fifth inning with a left triceps contusion. He is listed as day-to-day. ... Phillies 3B Maikel Franco, one of the top prospects in the organization, made his major-league debut. He batted seventh and went 0-for-3 with an eighth-inning sacrifice fly. ... This marked only the second time in 28 starts this season Kendrick did not allow a run.
