Braves 1, Marlins 0: Alex Wood tied a career high with 12 strikeouts in eight shutout innings and Evan Gattis hit a solo homer as host Atlanta won for the fourth time in five games.

Wood (10-10) improved to 3-1 in his past five starts, giving up five hits with no walks as the Braves remained 1 ½ games out of the final National League wild-card spot and moved within six games of Washington in the NL East. Phil Gosselin finished 3-for-4 and Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his 41st save.

Miami starter Nathan Eovaldi (6-10) pitched well, surrendering just the one run on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings with one walk and six strikeouts. Donovan Solano went 2-for-4 for the Marlins, who capped a 3-6 road trip.

Gattis put the Braves ahead 1-0 in the second, hitting Eovaldi’s first pitch of the frame into the seats in left-center for his 21st homer. Eovaldi, who has received two runs or less of run support in 12 of his 28 starts, stranded two runners in the third and fifth before singles from Gosselin and Freddie Freeman chased him in the seventh.

Wood surrendered three consecutive singles to load the bases with one out in the sixth, but rallied to strike out Giancarlo Stanton and froze Casey McGehee on a called third strike to end the inning. Kimbrel got a great field and throw from third baseman Chris Johnson – upheld by video review – to retire Donovan Solano for the first out of the ninth, got Stanton to pop out and, after McGehee singled to right, struck out pinch-hitter Garrett Jones.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Freeman, who started the day 4-for-58 against Miami this season, went 2-for-3. … Wood recorded double-digit strikeouts for the second time in five games, also fanning a career-best 12 against Washington on Aug. 10. … Miami traded minor-league RHP Chaz Roe, who converted 14-of-18 save opportunities for Triple-A New Orleans, to the New York Yankees for cash considerations.
