Nationals 3, Braves 0: Doug Fister worked eight superb innings and Anthony Rendon recorded three hits and two RBIs as host Washington defeated Atlanta for just the second time in nine tries this season.

Fister (6-2) pitched the Nationals past the Braves and into first place in the National League East by one-half game, holding Atlanta to five hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Rendon finished 3-for-4, Jose Lobaton scored twice and Rafael Soriano pitched a perfect ninth for his 16th save.

Atlanta starter Julio Teheran (6-5) struck out 10 in seven innings while surrendering three runs on seven hits and two walks. Evan Gattis singled in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to 20 games, the longest active run in the majors.

Lobaton singled to lead off the third and scored on Rendon’s two-out base hit to center as the Nationals took a 1-0 lead. Teheran balked Adam LaRoche to second in the sixth – after struggling with Gattis to agree on pitch selection – and Ryan Zimmerman took advantage, lining an RBI single up the middle to make it 2-0.

Rendon added a double to center with two outs in the seventh, scoring Lobaton and extending the advantage to 3-0. That was more than enough for Fister, who stranded two baserunners in the first and sixth innings in winning for the sixth time in his last seven starts.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Gattis’ hitting streak is the first 20-game run by an Atlanta player since Dan Uggla’s 33-game streak in 2011. … Rendon is 8-for-21 with three doubles, two homers and eight RBIs in his last five games. … Teheran’s streak of 94 consecutive hitters faced without a walk ended with a sixth-inning free pass to LaRoche.
