Rockies 3, Braves 1: Michael Cuddyer and Troy Tulowitzki hit solo homers to back a strong pitching performance by Juan Nicasio as visiting Colorado evened the three-game series.

Charlie Culberson – starting for the injured Nolan Arenado at third base – went 2-for-4 and scored a controversial run on a successful replay challenge as Colorado improved to 1-1 on its nine-game road trip. Nicasio (5-2) allowed two hits in six innings, walking four while striking out five, and LaTroy Hawkins pitched the ninth for his 11th save.

Atlanta starter Mike Minor (2-3) allowed three runs on four hits with six strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. B.J. Upton had two of Atlanta’s four hits as the Braves lost for only the second time in their past seven contests.

Cuddyer homered for the second consecutive game, leading off the second with his fifth of the season. Tulowitzki launched Minor’s second pitch of the sixth inning just inside the left-field foul pole, his 14th homer making it 2-0.

The Rockies added a third run in the seventh when Culberson doubled and was called out trying to score on Charlie Blackmon’s fielder’s choice, but Colorado manager Walt Weiss challenged the ruling and replay showed Culberson’s hand reaching the plate just before Atlanta catcher Evan Gattis’ tag. The Braves scored in the eighth when Justin Upton’s sacrifice fly plated B.J. Upton.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Rockies placed Arenado (fractured finger) on the disabled list and recalled INF Josh Rutledge from Triple-A Colorado Springs. … Nicasio worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third, getting Justin Upton to foul out to first. … Atlanta RF Jason Heyward went hitless, ending his hitting streak at 11 games.
