Braves 2, Cubs 0: Ryan Doumit’s pinch-hit double in the seventh snapped a scoreless tie as host Atlanta edged Chicago for the second straight night.

Doumit’s deep drive to the base of the left-field wall plated Chris Johnson, who finished 2-for-3 as the Braves won for the third time in four games. Ervin Santana (4-0) pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits while striking out seven, and Craig Kimbrel notched his 10th save.

Chicago starter Jeff Samardzija held the Braves in check with six scoreless innings, striking out seven and allowing just two hits. Brian Schlitter (2-1) gave up two runs on three hits while recording two outs and Ryan Kalish went 2-for-4.

Johnson greeted Schlitter with a leadoff single to center in the seventh, moved to second on B.J. Upton’s sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on Andrelton Simmons' single. Doumit, batting .194 on the season, pinch hit for Santana and drove a 1-0 pitch off the left-field wall to score Johnson, and Tyler Pastornicky’s suicide squeeze scored Simmons to make it 2-0.

Santana and Samardzija pitched well despite a 1-hour, 6-minute rain delay in the third inning. Santana wiggled out of trouble in the fourth thanks to a rundown during which Atlanta held Kalish at third while tagging out Anthony Rizzo between first and second base, while Samardzija benefited from Junior Lake’s running catch of Evan Gattis’ drive in left-center with two runners on to close the sixth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Atlanta LF Justin Upton left the game in the sixth after being hit in the left hip with a Samardzija pitch, two innings after absorbing a hard shot from Rizzo while making the tag to end the rundown play. … The Cubs were shut out for the fifth time this season, and have scored no runs in three of Samardzija’s eight starts. … Atlanta placed P Jordan Walden on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring, recalling P Ian Thomas from Triple-A Gwinnett.
