Red Sox 4, Royals 2: Allen Webster scattered four hits over six innings and Mookie Betts had two hits and an RBI as visiting Boston took its second straight from Kansas City.

Daniel Nava drove in a run and scored while Jemile Weeks had two hits and two runs scored for the Red Sox, who clinched at least a draw of the four-game series. Webster (4-3) surrendered two runs while striking out a pair and three relievers bridged the gap to Edward Mujica, who set down the side in the ninth for his sixth save.

Eric Hosmer homered as the Royals dropped a half-game behind the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central and fell into a tie with the Seattle Mariners for the AL's second wild card. Yordano Ventura (12-10) was charged with four runs - three earned - on eight hits while striking out six in seven innings for Kansas City, which fell to 0-5 against lowly Boston since the All-Star break.

The Red Sox did the bulk of their damage in a wild third inning, when Weeks doubled and scored the opening run on Betts’ single to right. Ventura hit Nava with a pitch before Betts ended up scoring when third baseman Mike Moustakas sailed a throw over first on Yoenis Cespedes’ infield hit, and Nava crossed on a wild pitch to cap the three-run rally.

Hosmer cut the deficit to one run with a towering two-run shot into the front row in right in the fourth but Boston struck again in the next half-inning when Weeks doubled again and scored on Nava’s single. The Royals did not put a runner on base in any of the final five innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Boston RHP Koji Uehara worked for the first time since being demoted from the closer spot on Sept. 4, pitching a 1-2-3 eighth inning. … Kansas City closer Greg Holland (triceps) worked for the first time since Sept. 3, and walked one in a scoreless ninth. … Red Sox DH David Ortiz (bruised right foot) and 1B Mike Napoli (finger, toe) both sat out and are day-to-day.
