Red Sox 5, Mariners 4: David Ortiz homered and had three RBIs while Daniel Nava went 3-for-4 and drove in a run as visiting Boston salvaged the finale of the three-game series.
Clay Buchholz (3-4) allowed four runs and seven hits in 7 1/3 innings after being activated from the disabled list, where he spent nearly a month with a knee injury. Koji Uehara allowed two runners to reach in the ninth before retiring the final two batters for his 16th save.
Mike Zunino hit a two-run homer while Kyle Seager and Brad Miller added solo shots for Seattle, which had its season-best five-game winning streak halted. Seager laced his third hit - a one-out single to right in the ninth - and Logan Morrison walked before Uehara struck out Zunino and retired Dustin Ackley on a grounder.
Ortiz blasted a two-run shot in the first inning – the 449th of his career, matching Jeff Bagwell and Vladimir Guerrero for 37th on the all-time list – off Hisashi Iwakuma (5-4), who allowed five runs and eight hits in four-plus frames. Seager hit his homer in the second and Zunino belted a two-run shot later in the inning to give Seattle a 3-2 lead.
Nava and Ortiz stroked run-scoring singles in the third to put Boston back ahead and another run crossed when Ortiz hit into a double play with the bases loaded in the fifth. Miller homered in the eighth to bring the Mariners within one.
