Tigers 6, Red Sox 2: Ian Kinsler and Torii Hunter homered in support of six strong innings from Drew Smyly as Detroit knocked off visiting Boston to snap a five-game slide.

Hunter recorded three hits and scored twice while Victor Martinez added a solo blast in the eighth inning and finished with two RBIs for the Tigers. Smyly (3-4) allowed two runs – one earned – on five hits and a walk while striking out four to snap a six-game winless streak.

Xander Bogaerts doubled in a run and Jonny Gomes delivered a sacrifice fly for the Red Sox, who have dropped four in a row following a seven-game winning streak. Rubby De La Rosa (1-1) yielded four runs and nine hits over 5 2/3 innings in his second start.

Detroit knotted it at 1-1 when Nick Castellanos doubled and scored on Andrew Romine’s single in the third and took the lead an inning later as Martinez lifted a sacrifice fly to center that plated Hunter. De La Rosa got two quick outs in the fifth before hanging a 1-0 changeup that Kinsler belted out to left, and Hunter followed by ripping a 1-0 fastball out to right to push it the advantage to 4-1.

Dustin Pedroia reached on a throwing error, moved to third on David Ortiz’s single and scored on Gomes’ sacrifice fly in the sixth to cut the deficit to two runs. But Martinez homered off Chris Capuano in the eighth and Bryan Holaday tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Austin Jackson to extend the lead and keep struggling closer Joe Nathan out of a save situation.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Tigers C Alex Avila left the game in the eighth inning with a head injury after getting hit on Ortiz’s backswing. … Red Sox RHP Clay Buchholz (knee) is set to pitch a simulated game on Saturday, while LHP Felix Doubront (shoulder) remains on a minor-league rehab assignment and could return soon. … Boston SS Jonathan Herrera doubled in the fifth for his first extra-base hit of the season.
