Yankees 4, Red Sox 1:
Michael Pineda outdueled Clay Buchholz and Dean Anna hit his first career home run as host New York took the first meeting of the season from rival Boston.

Jacoby Ellsbury drove in a run and scored against his former team and Brian McCann added an RBI for the Yankees, who evened their record at 5-5. Pineda (1-1) allowed one run and four hits in six-plus innings while striking out seven before Cesar Cabral bridged the gap to David Phelps, who worked the final 2 1/3 innings to earn his first save.

Daniel Nava hit a solo home run and Xander Bogaerts recorded two hits for the Red Sox. Buchholz (0-1) was charged with four runs - two earned - on seven hits while striking out six in as many innings to match his loss total from 2013.

Ellsbury reached on an error by third baseman Jonathan Herrera leading off the fourth and Carlos Beltran followed with a single before McCann’s hit plated the first of two runs in the frame. Anna came up with one out in the fifth and ripped 1-1 breaking ball from Buchholz out to right to make it 3-0, and Ellsbury followed a ground-rule double by Derek Jeter with a single to push the gap to four runs.

Boston finally got on the board in the seventh, when Nava blasted a high fastball from Pineda into the second deck in right for his first homer of the season. Bogaerts followed with a single and moved to second on a balk, but Cabral struck out two and Phelps came on to retire Ryan Roberts and end the threat.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters that he and general manager Ben Cherington plan to give Ellsbury and LHP Matt Thornton their World Series rings on Friday. … Boston OF Grady Sizemore made his first career start in left field with Jackie Bradley Jr. taking over in center. … Phelps got the save opportunity with David Robertson on the DL and Shawn Kelley unavailable after working three of the last four days.
