Orioles 5, Rays 3: Ryan Flaherty recorded a pair of hits, including a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning, as visiting Baltimore edged Tampa Bay to take the opener of a three-game series.
Nick Markakis’ fielder’s choice made it 5-3 in the eighth, reliever Darren O’Day (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh to get the win and Tommy Hunter loaded the bases in the ninth before retiring the final two batters for his ninth save. Steve Pearce belted his first homer while Nelson Cruz and Matt Wieters each collected two hits for the Orioles.
Evan Longoria slammed a two-run homer and Ben Zobrist also knocked in a run for the Rays, who have dropped all three games against Baltimore this season. Joel Peralta (1-2) only retired one batter in the eighth and gave up two runs on three hits and a walk to suffer the loss.
The Rays tied the game 3-3 in the seventh on Zobrist’s sacrifice fly after Wil Myers’ single, a walk and a hit batsman filled the bases. Wieters singled and Steve Clevenger doubled in the eighth before play was halted for 19 minutes due to a power outage; Pearce walked following the delay, setting up Flaherty’s ground single to right for a 4-3 lead.
Matt Joyce singled with two outs in the first inning and scored when Longoria hammered an 0-2 pitch over the center-field wall. Pearce led off the third with a solo blast and the Orioles loaded the bases with none out in each of the next two innings, managing only sacrifice flies from J.J. Hardy in the fourth and Adam Jones in the fifth.
