Orioles 7, Red Sox 6: Nick Markakis, Nelson Cruz, Adam Jones and Steve Clevenger each drove in a run and scored as visiting Baltimore escaped a jam in the ninth to earn a split of the four-game series.

Tommy Hunter loaded the bases with one out in the ninth and allowed a run before earning his fifth save in support of five solid innings from Wei-Yin Chen (3-1). Chris Davis, Jones and Jonathan Schoop added an RBI apiece during a six-run third inning for the Orioles, who spoiled the annual Patriots Day 11 a.m. ET start in Boston.

Clay Buchholz (0-2) surrendered six runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings to double his loss total from 2013. David Ross and Mike Napoli added a solo home run apiece and Jackie Bradley Jr. and Dustin Pedroia each doubled in a run for the Red Sox, but Mike Carp grounded to first with the tying run on third to end the game.

Buchholz did not allow a hit through the first two innings but yielded five straight singles to begin the third, with Markakis, Cruz and Davis driving in runs. Jones grounded into an RBI fielder’s choice and scored on Clevenger’s double to right before Schoop chased Buchholz with another RBI single.

Boston cut the deficit in half against Chen in the fifth when Bradley sent an RBI ground-rule double into the right-field corner and Brock Holt followed with a sacrifice fly before Pedroia capped the rally. Ross went deep to left in the seventh and Napoli connected in the eighth, but Baltimore added an insurance run and the Red Sox's ninth-inning rally fell short.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Holt became the Boston's fifth different leadoff hitter in 20 games and went 2-for-4 out of that spot. … Orioles SS J.J. Hardy (hamstring) sat out the game after leaving Sunday’s contest and is day-to-day. … Buchholz went 12-1 with a 1.74 ERA in an injury-plagued 2013 and owns a 7.71 ERA through four starts this season.
