Marlins 2, Diamondbacks 1: Henderson Alvarez struck out six over seven strong innings in his return from a shoulder injury and Marcell Ozuna scored on an error in the seventh to snap a tie and lift host Miami to victory.

Jeff Baker delivered an RBI triple for the Marlins, who climbed within 3 1/2 games of the second wild-card spot in the National League. Alvarez (9-5) allowed one run on five hits and a walk in his first start since July 29 and Mike Dunn worked a scoreless eighth before Steve Cishek fanned two in a perfect ninth for his 31st save.

Mark Trumbo drove in the lone run for the Diamondbacks, who fell to 2-3 on their 10-game road trip. Wade Miley (7-9) was excellent in defeat, yielding two runs - one earned - and four hits with nine strikeouts in seven frames.

Alvarez proved to be a bit rusty, allowing three straight singles to begin the game. Ender Inciarte was thrown out at the plate on David Peralta's base hit, but Cliff Pennington scored on Trumbo's sacrifice fly after a double steal to give Arizona an early lead.

Miami pulled even in the fourth as Giancarlo Stanton led off with an infield single and raced home on Baker's triple. Ozuna opened the seventh with a single, went to second on a botched pickoff attempt and third on a groundout before scoring on a throwing error by Diamondbacks shortstop Pennington for a 2-1 edge.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Inciarte, who finished 2-for-4, extended his career-best hitting streak to 16 contests with his game-opening single. ...
