Pirates 5, Diamondbacks 1: Rookie Gregory Polanco belted a two-run homer and Charlie Morton tossed six solid innings as host Pittsburgh posted its ninth win in 11 outings.

Starling Marte had an RBI double and drove in a pair while Andrew McCutchen added a run-scoring single for the Pirates, who won their fourth straight series and moved a season-high four games over .500. Jordy Mercer added three hits and Polanco, McCutchen and Russell Martin chipped in with two apiece.

Aaron Hill had an RBI single for the second straight game, but the Diamondbacks mustered little else en route to dropping their third straight contest. Paul Goldschmidt collected three of his team's eight hits to improve to 5-for-7 in the series.

After scoring on Marte's groundout in the first inning, Polanco gave Pittsburgh a 3-0 advantage in the second after depositing a 3-1 curveball from Chase Anderson (5-4) over the wall in right field. The rookie right-hander didn't last much longer, exiting after permitting eight hits in 3 2/3 innings to take the loss.

Morton (5-9) rebounded after suffering a loss despite striking out a career-high 11 batters by allowing one run on five hits to pick up the win. Three relievers combined to yield three hits to seal the victory.

GAME NOTEBOOK: McCutchen was named the National League Player of the Month for June on Wednesday. The reigning NL MVP batted .343 with eight homers in 26 games during the month. ... Anderson has lost his last four starts after winning his initial five of his major-league career. ... Pirates LHP Francisco Liriano pitched a simulated game Wednesday without issue as he continues to work his way back from a strained left oblique.
