Red Sox 6, Cardinals 1: Shane Victorino played the hero in a series-clinching game for the second straight round with four RBIs and host Boston got 6 2/3 strong innings from John Lackey to clinch the franchise’s eighth World Series championship.

Victorino, whose grand slam in Game 6 of the ALCS lifted the Red Sox past the Detroit Tigers, delivered a three-run double in the third inning and an RBI single in the fourth after missing the previous two games with a back strain. Lackey (1-1) scattered nine hits and allowed one run while walking one and striking out five to pick up the second World Series-clinching win of his career.

David Ortiz, who was named World Series MVP, capped a brilliant series with four walks - three intentional - and two runs scored, and Stephen Drew blasted a solo homer as the Red Sox won their third title in the last 10 seasons.

Michael Wacha (1-1) had allowed a total of three runs in four previous postseason starts but was lit up for six on five hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings to suffer his first loss since Sept. 14. Matt Carpenter went 3-for-5 and doubled for the lone extra base hit for St. Louis, which dropped three straight after holding a 2-1 lead in the series.

Jacoby Ellsbury led off the third with a single and moved up on a groundout before Ortiz was intentionally walked. Wacha struck out Mike Napoli but hit Jonny Gomes with a pitch to load the bases for Victorino, who snapped an 0-for-10 drought in the series by banging a 2-1 fastball high off the Green Monster in left for a three-run double.

Drew, who entered the game 4-for-50 in the playoffs, led off the fourth and blasted a first-pitch fastball into the Boston bullpen to make it a 4-0 cushion. Ortiz was intentionally walked again with a runner on third later in the fourth and the Cardinals went to the bullpen for Lance Lynn, who surrendered an RBI single to Napoli and walked Gomes before Victorino again delivered with the bases loaded for a run-scoring single and a 6-0 lead.

The Cardinals put runners in scoring position in three different innings before finally breaking through against Lackey in the seventh on Carlos Beltran’s RBI single. Lackey walked Matt Holliday to load the bases, but Junichi Tazawa came on and retired Allen Craig on a grounder to first to end the threat.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Red Sox clinched a World Series at Fenway Park for the first time since 1918. They won in St. Louis in 2004 and at Colorado in 2007. … Lackey picked up the win in Game 7 of the 2002 World Series as a rookie with the Anaheim Angels. … Ortiz reached base 19 times in the series, second only in World Series history to Barry Bonds in 2002, who needed seven games to reach base 21 times. Ortiz, Bonds and Albert Pujols are the only players ever to be intentionally walked three times in one World Series game.
