Cardinals 3, Padres 2: Adam Wainwright became the National League’s first 13-game winner, David Freese hit a tiebreaking two-run double and Allen Craig made a game-saving catch as host St. Louis defeated San Diego.

Wainwright (13-5) allowed two runs and eight hits in eight innings. He struck out seven and walked two to join Detroit’s Max Scherzer, Tampa Bay’s Matt Moore and Oakland's Bartolo Colon as the only hurlers in the majors with 13 victories.

The Padres had runners on second and third with two out in the ninth when pinch hitter Jedd Gyorko hit a fly ball that Craig leaped to catch at the left-field fence to preserve Edward Mujica’s 28th save in 30 chances. St. Louis also received a break one batter earlier when Jesus Guzman’s double down the left-field line bounced into the low stands to prevent Alexi Amarista from scoring the tying run.

Craig also had a game-tying single in the third inning before Freese hit a liner to center that eluded the diving attempt of Amarista. Yadier Molina and Craig scored to give the Cardinals a 3-1 lead.

Yonder Alonso had three hits off Wainwright, including a run-scoring single in the first. Padres starter Eric Stults (8-8) gave up three runs and eight hits in six innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: St. Louis rested OF Carlos Beltran due to the All-Star feeling a “little achy,” according to Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. … The Padres placed RHP Jason Marquis (elbow) on the disabled list and recalled RHP Miles Mikolas from Triple-A Tucson. … It was Freese’s first two-RBI game since June 25.
