Yankees 5, Blue Jays 3: Andy Pettitte tossed six strong innings and Curtis Granderson homered to ignite the offense as New York won its 13th straight home game against Toronto and fifth in a row overall.

Eduardo Nunez ripped a two-run base hit and both Vernon Wells and Chris Stewart had RBIs for the Yankees, who moved within six games of first-place Boston in the American League East. New York resides 3 1/2 games behind Oakland for the second wild card spot.

Pettitte (9-9) was unfazed by a 3-hour, 32-minute rain delay as he let up one run and four hits while striking out three to record his 254th career victory, tying him with Jack Morris and Red Faber for 42nd all-time. David Robertson picked up his second save in place of regular closer Mariano Rivera, who had pitched in the first three contests of New York's four-game sweep.

J.P. Arencibia took Pettitte deep to make it 1-0 in the top of the fifth but Granderson answered in the bottom half with a leadoff shot to right off J.A. Happ (3-3). Wells put the Yankees ahead to stay on a shot to center that appeared to be caught by a sliding Rajai Davis. It was ruled a trap and an RBI forceout when an unaware Stewart was out on the bases. Blue Jays manager John Gibbons was ejected for arguing the play.

Nunez drove in a pair of runs in the sixth and Stewart added an RBI groundout to make it 5-1. Toronto got two back in the seventh but stranded a pair of runners in the inning and fell to 1-12 against New York this season.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Happ was reached for four runs on three hits and five walks in 5 1/3 innings. ... Toronto placed IF Maicer Izturis on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained ankle and New York placed IF Jayson Nix on the DL with a broken left hand. Nix, who was hit by a pitch Wednesday night, is expected to miss the rest of the season. ... Toronto continues its road trip at Houston on Friday night. The Yankees head to Tampa Bay for a big three-game series.
