Angels 2, Mariners 0: Chris Nelson hit a two-run homer and Garrett Richards pitched 7 1/3 superb innings as visiting Los Angeles spoiled the return of Seattle manager Eric Wedge.

Nelson’s blast off a 2-2 pitch in the second inning was all Richards needed to outduel Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, who fell to 8-13 lifetime against the Angels. Richards (4-5) struck out four, gave up four hits and issued two walks before exiting with a right forearm contusion after being drilled by Dustin Ackley’s liner.

Dane De La Rosa replaced Richards and recorded the final two outs in the eighth. Ernesto Frieri gave up a two-out single by Kyle Seager in the ninth before fanning Raul Ibanez for his third strikeout of the inning as he notched his 27th save in 31 opportunities.

Wedge was in the dugout as manager for the first time since suffering a stroke prior to a game on July 22. Seattle went 12-15 under bench coach Robby Thompson while Wedge was sidelined and making lifestyle changes.

Hernandez (12-7) gave up two runs and three hits while striking out 10 in six innings. The American League Cy Young Award candidate has lost three of his last four starts.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Los Angeles OF Mike Trout went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts to snap a 40-game on-base streak. The mark was the longest active streak in the majors for Trout, who was playing in his first game since suffering a tight right hamstring on Sunday. … Mariners 2B Nick Franklin (knee laceration) missed his second straight contest. … Los Angeles SS Erick Aybar fielded the shot that caromed off Richards and threw Ackley out at first base.
