Yankees 8, Royals 1: Lyle Overbay hit a grand slam and Robinson Cano belted a three-run homer as host New York emerged from its slump and snapped a three-game losing streak.

Ivan Nova (4-2) rode the rare power surge by the Yankees to win his second straight start, giving up one run on five hits and striking out six in eight innings. It was the most runs scored at home this season by New York, which had one extra-base hit during its skid.

The Yankees had been held to one run in three consecutive games, but Cano (three hits) put an end to that streak when he launched a three-run shot off Wade Davis (4-8) in the third inning for his 21st homer and a 4-0 edge.

New York broke open the game in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs before Overbay notched his fourth career slam with an opposite-field shot to left to make it 8-0 and end Davis' night. It was Overbay's 11th homer, matching his total from the previous two seasons combined.

Davis was charged with eight runs on six hits in five-plus innings in losing his third straight start and falling to 2-5 lifetime against New York. Eric Hosmer had two hits - including a run-scoring double - for the Royals, giving him eight multi-hit games and 11 RBIs over his last 12 contests.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees SS Derek Jeter continued his rehab assignment Wednesday at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and, barring a setback, is expected to rejoin New York's lineup for Friday's home game versus Minnesota. ... Yankees DH Travis Hafner (left foot) and CF Brett Gardner (right leg) each left the game with contusions, but X-rays were negative and both players are listed as day-to-day. ... CBSSports.com reported Wednesday that the Yankees are shopping RHPs Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain in the hopes of landing a power hitter. Both pitchers can become free agents at the end of the season.
