Marlins 1, Tigers 0: Henderson Alvarez pitched his first career no-hitter and the winning run scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning as host Miami completed a three-game sweep of Detroit.

Alvarez (5-6) hit one batter, walked one and struck out four to give the Marlins their first no-hitter since Anibal Sanchez in 2006 and the fifth overall in franchise history. Giancarlo Stanton singled with one out, moved to second on a single by Logan Morrison, to third on a wild pitch and scored when Luke Putkonen (1-3) bounced a pitch in the dirt.

Detroit starter Justin Verlander yielded only three hits and struck out 10 in six innings to keep the game scoreless. Miguel Cabrera was rested by Detroit (93-69), which opens its American League Division Series at Oakland on Friday.

Verlander recorded eight of his 10 strikeouts while Alvarez allowed only one base runner on a hit batsman through the first four innings. Jose Iglesias reached on an error by shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria with two outs in the sixth for the Tigers, but Alvarez retired Ramon Santiago on a grounder.

Alvarez, who threw 99 pitches, allowed his lone walk to Andy Dirks with two outs in the ninth before striking out Matt Tuiasosopo to end the inning. The right-hander from Venezuela was on deck when Stanton scored the winning run with the bases loaded for the Marlins (62-100).

GAME NOTEBOOK: Al Leiter (1996), Kevin Brown (1997) and A.J. Burnett (2001) have the other no-hitters for the Marlins and Alvarez pitched the third in the majors this season, joining Cincinnati’s Homer Bailey and Tim Lincecum of San Francisco. … Verlander did not give up a run and struck out 22 over 12 innings in his last two outings of the regular season without getting a decision. … The Marlins promoted Michael Hill to president of baseball operations and Dan Jennings to general manager.
