Tigers 3, Mets 0: Max Scherzer struck out 11 in six scoreless innings to become the third pitcher in major-league history to open a season 19-1 as Detroit beat host New York for the second straight day.

Scherzer (19-1) allowed only three hits and helped himself with an RBI double to win his sixth consecutive decision and outduel Mets ace Matt Harvey in a rematch of starting pitchers from this year's All-Star Game. Jose Alvarez and Jose Veras combined to set down all six batters they faced before Joaquin Benoit worked a perfect ninth for his 17th save in as many chances.

Andy Dirks and Omar Infante had three hits apiece and Austin Jackson added two hits and an RBI single to help the first-place Tigers maintain a six-game lead over Cleveland in the American League Central. Miguel Cabrera had two hits to extend his on-base streak to 27 games and Don Kelly provided an insurance run with a ninth-inning sacrifice fly.

Harvey (9-5) surrendered a career-high 13 hits but limited the damage to two runs over 6 2/3 innings before leaving with the bases loaded in the seventh. Eric Young Jr. threw out Infante at the plate in the inning and Scott Rice escaped the jam by retiring pinch hitter Torii Hunter on a groundout to keep it a two-run deficit.

Scherzer put Detroit on top with a run-scoring double in the second and Jackson followed with an infield single to plate another run. The Mets loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, but Scherzer struck out Juan Lagares and got John Buck to pop out to end the threat.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Scherzer, who joined Rube Marquard (1912) and Roger Clemens (2001) as the only pitchers to win 19 of their first 20 decisions in a season, collected his first hit since 2009 when he was a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was 0-for-8 since becoming a member of the Tigers. ... Harvey is the third pitcher in franchise history to hold an opponent to two runs on 13 hits, joining Jason Isringhausen (1995) and Al Jackson (1962). ... Tigers SS Jose Iglesias was not in the starting lineup due to a sore left elbow as a result of getting plunked by a pitch in the ninth inning of Friday's series opener.
