Tigers 2, Mariners 1 (14): Catcher Brayan Pena drove in the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice in the 14th inning and held on to the ball as Justin Smoak crashed into him in the bottom of the inning to conclude the game as Detroit notched its fourth consecutive road victory.

Pena's grounder scored pinch-runner Don Kelly from third to plate the decisive run against Charlie Furbush (0-1) and Seattle nearly tied it in when Dustin Ackley doubled into the right-field corner in the bottom of the frame. Smoak attempted to score from first base but relay throws from Torii Hunter and Prince Fielder beat Smoak to the plate and Pena held on to the ball despite being slammed into by the charging Smoak.

The extra-inning game featured 40 combined strikeouts, tying for second-most since the live ball era began in 1920. Only a 20-inning affair between the Athletics and Angels in 1971 combined for more (43).

Max Scherzer of the Tigers pitched eight innings, allowing one earned run and six hits while striking out 12 and walking one. Seattle's Felix Hernandez also pitched eight innings, allowing an unearned run and four hits while striking out 12 and walking none. Seven relievers for Detroit combined to shut down the Mariners on five hits over the final six innings, with Joaquin Benoit surviving Seattle's rally in the 14th to save the victory for Drew Smyly (1-0).

Jhonny Peralta's groundout gave Detroit a 1-0 lead in the fifth. Seattle tied the score at 1 in the seventh after Michael Morse led off with a double from the cleanup spot and Raul Ibanez followed with an RBI single to right.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The last time two starters allowed one earned run or fewer while striking out at least 12 was in a 1992 matchup between Randy Johnson and Mark Langston. … The Tigers combined to strike out 19 batters in the game and the Mariners 21, marking the second time since 1916 both teams fanned at least 18 batters in a game. The other game was between the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres in 2001. … Tigers 1B Prince Fielder struck out five times, giving him nine strikeouts in the last two games.
