Mets 2, Indians 1: Eric Young Jr. drove in the tiebreaking run in the top of the ninth inning as New York avoided a three-game sweep and ended Cleveland’s four-game winning streak.

With the game tied 1-1 in the ninth, Matt den Dekker singled on the first pitch he saw from Chris Perez (5-3) and moved to second on a sacrifice by Anthony Recker. Omar Quintanilla struck out, but Young drilled a 2-0 fastball down the right-field line to plate den Dekker and improve the Mets to 2-5 in September.

Frank Francisco (1-0) issued a walk and recorded two outs in the eighth in his season debut while LaTroy Hawkins worked around a leadoff single in the ninth for his eighth save. Justin Turner went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double, keeping Cleveland 5½ games behind first-place Detroit in the American League Central and dropping it two back of Tampa Bay for the second wild-card spot.

Indians rookie Danny Salazar struck out eight over four frames but paid for his only mistake as Turner hammered a 3-1 fastball into the left-field stands for his second homer of the series. Mets starter Daisuke Matsuzaka did not allow a hit until the fourth but ran into trouble in the sixth, when he surrendered a single and a walk before exiting after taking a line drive off his right shoulder.

Vic Black came on in relief with the bases loaded and plunked Asdrubal Cabrera with his second pitch, forcing home the tying run. The Mets loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but Cody Allen worked himself out of the situation he created by striking out Turner and inducing a grounder from Juan Lagares.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Turner finished the series 5-for-12 with four RBIs while hitting his first two homers of the season. … The Indians' Jason Giambi recorded his 2,000th career hit - a single in the ninth inning. … Matsuzaka, who requested his release from the Indians on Aug. 20 after he was unable to crack the roster, allowed one run and three hits before leaving with two outs in the sixth.
