Indians 3, Twins 1: Drew Stubbs delivered a tiebreaking solo home run in the eighth inning as Cleveland took two of three at home from Minnesota.

Nick Swisher added two hits and drove in an insurance run in the eighth for the Indians, who remained six games back of American League Central-leading Detroit Tigers. Joe Smith (5-1) tossed a scoreless inning in relief as Cleveland overcame four errors and moved 1 1/2 games behind Oakland for the second AL wild-card spot.

Doug Bernier finished with two hits and drove in the Twins’ only run. Jared Burton (2-7) was tagged with both eighth-inning runs.

Cleveland broke through in the third when starter Mike Pelfrey issued two of his six walks and Jason Kipnis sent a two-out blooper into shallow left to score Michael Bourn. Minnesota answered in the fifth as Clete Thomas opened with a single, advanced to third following a sacrifice and a single and scored on Bernier’s safety-squeeze bunt.

The game remained tied until the eighth when Stubbs – who drew a walk in each of his first three at-bats – belted Burton’s high 0-1 fastball over the fence to center. Bourn doubled five pitches later and scored for the second time when Swisher lined to shallow right while Chris Perez worked around a two-out walk in the ninth for his 21st save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Kipnis went 1-for-4 and is batting .414 with 21 RBIs against Minnesota this season. The RBI total is more than twice the number he has against any other team. … Scott Kazmir allowed a run on seven hits and struck out eight while Pelfrey yielded a run on two hits over five frames. … Kazmir has a 1.44 ERA in four outings against the Twins this season – his lowest ERA against any opponent he has faced more than once.
