Indians 3, Angels 1: Nick Swisher hit a two-run homer and Justin Masterson pitched 6 2/3 strong innings as Cleveland completed a three-game road sweep of Los Angeles.

Swisher’s 15th blast of the season helped propel the Indians within 2 1/2 games of the Oakland Athletics for the American League’s second wild-card berth. Cleveland remained 5 1/2 games behind first-place Detroit in the AL Central.

Masterson (14-9) gave up one run and five hits to win for the first time since Aug. 1. Rich Hill got the final out of the seventh, Cody Allen worked around a double in the eighth while recording all the outs via strikeout and Chris Perez struck out two while stranding a runner in the ninth for his 20th save in 24 opportunities.

Cleveland’s Michael Bourn hit a leadoff triple in the third and Swisher followed with a blast into the right-field seats. Los Angeles got on the board in the sixth when Hank Conger doubled into the right-field corner to drive in Josh Hamilton, but the Indians pushed the lead back to two in the ninth when Mike Aviles scored on Dane De La Rosa’s second wild pitch of the inning.

Jerome Williams (5-10) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings while losing his eighth consecutive decision. The fading Angels have lost four consecutive games and nine of 11.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Los Angeles OF Mike Trout (hamstring) missed his third consecutive game. … Indians 2B Jason Kipnis went 0-for-4 and was hitless in 14 at-bats in the series. … The Angels recalled RHP Billy Buckner from Triple-A Salt Lake City and optioned OF Collin Cowgill to the same club.
